The Partial Knee Meeting

The Harrogate Partial Knee Meeting

A two-day meeting focusing on Fixed-Bearing Unicompartmental and Patello-Femoral Arthroplasty.

Hosted in the delightful setting of the Pavilions of Harrogate, the course convenors are Harrogate Surgeons Nick London, Dave Duffy, Damian Bull and Mark Farndon. The meeting is aimed at senior orthopaedic trainees, knee fellows and new or established consultants. There is an excellent national and international faculty on board featuring David Barrett, Richard Parkinson, Paul Nicolai and Francesco Benazzo.

Following the recent NICE guidelines recommending UKA as a treatment modality that should be offered to suitable patients; a particular focus of the meeting will be how to safely grow a UKA practice.

Fixed-bearing partial knee arthroplasty is the gold standard for unicompartmental knee surgery combining outstanding patient outcomes and very low revision rates.

This comprehensive meeting will provide:

  • a detailed review of the history and current state of partial knee arthroplasty
  • guidance of national joint registry data and how to safely commence a partial knee practice
  • clear evidence-based indications and selection criteria
  • surgical techniques, tips and tricks for medial, lateral and patello-femoral arthroplasty
  • panel discussions on assistive technology (including robotics), day surgery and other topics

The meeting is aimed at senior trainees, newly-appointed consultants and established consultants wishing to develop or expand their partial knee arthroplasty practice.

If you’re interested in the course you can find out more via clockwork medical.

American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society WInter Meeting, Tampa FL, USA, January 2024

American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society Winter Meeting, Tampa FL, USA, January 2024

AOFAS is a world leading congress for the foot and ankle surgical community. I was delighted to not only attend the meeting but also to have the opportunity to present and discuss some of the research work we have carried out at Leeds University during the cartilage repair sessions.  As ever, it was also a privilege to meet and catch up with colleagues from around the world during the congress.

The research presentation involved work carried out with Leeds University in the Biomechanics laboratory. We  wanted to evaluate a cartilage repair device that I routinely use in my practice for injuries in the knee and ankle that require key hole or open surgery. These evaluations have allowed me to share information about how this enhanced technique might work during surgery and confirm the potential benefits to patients.

Team Education

Sports Injury Teaching Session with Physiotherapists

September 2023, Sports injury education for the physiotherapy team at Duchy Circle Health.

The role that the excellent physiotherapy team play before and after surgery is crucial.  Without the correct preparation prior surgery, there can be further complications after it.   Of course, rehabilitation following surgery is also key.

This is very evident with sports injuries. Sports people by nature will want to be back to normal activity levels as soon as possible, which is why working in a well organised team with shared education delivers the best results for our patients.

See more about sports injuries here.

Treating Athletes

Thank you to Craig Johnson for organising this round table session.  It was a great opportunity to get everyone together, share thoughts and further develop the already excellent care we offer patients at the Duchy Circle Health.

Treating athletes and managing sports injuries are a large part of my practise, both privately and in the NHS.  I look after some of the elite sports clubs in the local area and always enjoy the opportunity for further discussion on this topic.

Great to see everyone. Thanks again, Mark.

Foot and Ankle Joint Preservation

Foot and Ankle Joint Preservation Meeting

May 4th and 5th 2023

Mark was one of the lead consultants at a recent foot and ankle cartilage meeting in Edinburgh, alongside leading experts European experts.

I was delighted to be invited to present and take part in a recent developmental meeting, that covered cartilage techniques for the joint in the foot and ankle.  I was honored to lead and teach some key sessions throughout the meeting.

Repair techniques for damaged cartilage in the ankle play an important role in preserving the natural joint and returning patients back to an active lifestyle.    There are around 1 million ankle injuries each year in the UK, the majority of these are sprains, which can lead to cartilage injuries although many never require any surgical intervention.

However, we do see increasing numbers of patients who are affected by cartilage issues.

Within my current practice, I have developed surgical options to help patients gain back a healthy level of cartilage regrowth and function, while taking into account the required rehabilitation from the surgery.

I use a collagen matrix (ChondroGide) which has 10+ years of successful surgical results for both knee and ankle.  ChondroGide supports the body’s own biology in healing damaged cartilage.   I stimulate the healing response with a newer style device that creates localised bleeding, allowing cells from deeper inside the bone to flood the damaged area, but without causing further damag as some other older techniques have been shown to do.   The collagen matrix then creates a protective environment for these cells to begin the healing process.

You can learn more about the technique here.

Ankle Cartilage Surgery

It was an honor to lead several sessions during this meeting.

I’m looking forward to staying in touch with the group who attended and joining future events around these topics.

Mark.
